Our Story

Things have grown and changed in 11 years of business but dig's values remain the same: to create unique, sustainably-sourced items that connect to the user to the object. We want to buy good stuff from good people, give back, pay our employees well and create beautiful things that will endure the roughhousing of life.

Nici Holt Cline began hand-stitching fabric scraps on thrifted clothing in 2007, when she was pregnant with her first child. She eventually dusted off her sewing machine - a Singer Featherweight that she had inherited from her grandma several years prior - and taught herself to sew and alter secondhand baby clothes.

^ Nici's grandma's Singer is still in full time use ^

A fourth generation Montanan with love for her state, she one day cut out the silhouette of Montana and stitched it on a shirt for her daughter. She made a few for friends and then friends of friends...

In 2009, with the birth of her second child, she left her full time job at the Missoula Art Museum and leaned into dig this chick - her two-pronged business: writing (blog and elsewhere) and making (GEO, her line of appliquéd handmades featuring geographical silhouettes).

In 2016, dig this chick launched a new online storefront: DIG + CO. Nici appreciates beautifully crafted objects and holds a passion of adventuring, homesteading and artful living. She sought to work more directly - through collaboration and partnership - with other makers. DIG + CO. features her line as well as the work of others. Many things can only be found here at DIG + CO. and it's all made by the hands of people who love what they create.

dig this chick remains based in Cline's home in Missoula, Montana. The dig team has grown to include Kathie Pomeroy, Amanda Turpen and Karin Balke.

Our Team

NICI HOLT CLINE / owner + designer / Nici believes perspective shapes reality, kid wisdom is magic, digging dirt is religious and jumping in cold creeks is the secret to contentment. She enjoys writing, making, gardening, cooking, mothering and playing in the mountains with her family.

AMANDA TURPEN / dig assistant + head sewist / Amanda joined dig this chick in the fall of 2013, after trying her hand as a cook, a server, a seller of mid century housewares on ebay, an architectural assistant and an art teacher. Her background is in Art and Printmaking, where she earned her MFA in 2009.  She enjoys creating weird and colorful woodcuts about a crew of anthropomorphic miscreants.  She grew up in Northern California, where she developed her deep love of sunshine, wine and Mexican food. She has found her happy place in creating and sewing for dig this chick; other passions include home design, food, mountain creeks and spending time with her family.  Amanda lives in Missoula with her husband, toddler daughter and chiweenie, Kenny.

KARIN BALKE / sewist / Karin is a self-taught seamstress, mother, and art educator born and raised in Wisconsin who has lived in Missoula for the past 10 years.  When she is not sewing for dig, she enjoys snuggling with her kids, skiing, hiking, camping, baking, and finding the best deep river pools Montana has to offer.

KATHIE POMEROY / sewist / Kathie spent the years before dig this chick sewing ballet costumes and doing a lot of community organizing in Humboldt County, California. After coming back home to Montana, she has enjoyed reading Stephen King novels and doing her family's geneology with her mom - when she isn't sewing for dig!
